Meet Allie Kat – born Conalea Katherine but dubbed Allie Kat by her no-nonsense grandpa who says he can’t remember or pronounce her given name, and his opinion that she yowled at birth like an alley cat.
The Martin family ranches in imaginary Sage County in South Eastern Montana.
At 15 in 1967, Allie shoulders increasing responsibilities on the ranch due to her grandpa’s injury, while her sophisticated cousin Marissa drops into their world and stirs the waters, rarely to Allie’s benefit. Allie’s challenges to help right Marissa’s rudderless ship are often humorous but sometimes dramatic. Ten years her senior, bachelor neighbor and friend Bill mentors and assists Allie with ranch work, with training her colt and through personal crises, which all deepen their bond.
