The Head Honcho enjoys using the war bridle I gave him two years ago for his birthday. A few days ago, he lived a story with the war bridle, and it’s well worth sharing. To read the the full story, follow the link to the Short Story section of my web page using the following link War Bridle.
And I hope you can find the time to wish Sonny (you don’t have to call him Head Honcho) well on his 85th birthday on October 6th. He insists that we throw no parties for him, but he loves to see birthday wish messages .
The first batch of sourdough biscuits from new starter – with a choice of honey or chokecherry jelly – now that’s living! The Head Honcho said these were the best I’ve ever made!!!! It will be something special if he ever says they’re the best he’s ever eaten.
Somehow, though, I don’t think they fit into the plans for our waistbands to fit more loosely. Good thing I started the day with sit-ups, V-sits and crunches, but I’d better add an evening exercise program, too.
My beautiful Jersey heifer is weaned, contented and running with the other weaned calves. Peekaboo listens patiently to any and all of my stories, she’s always eager for a rub and a scratch, and in return I even get a slurp along an ear once in a while. I “milk” her occasionally, or catch and lead her around, just so she remembers her early lessons in milk cow-dom.
The other day several of the calves got into a porcupine. As curious as she is, we figured she’d be full of quills, but I found just one quill under her chin. I can’t imagine how she figured that out so fast…she must be as smart as she is pretty!
Since I’m not looking to leave my happy home, I won’t tell the Head Honcho she’s smarter than his Angus calves that were full of quills. It’ll just be my secret!
Note the leghorns on the swing! Sonny’s granddaughter Lindsay and family gave me this chicken swing for Christmas last year. I thought it was cute as heck, but didn’t think the chickens would pay any attention to it. And the old hens didn’t. But I put it in with the chicks this year, and they did a little swinging as babies, but now they’re all night swingers!
Always knew Sonny was a great hand…but gathering birds with the bulls??? He’s just showing off!
Just added a short story to my web site. It’s about record keeping for our first experience with DNA testing on replacement heifers. It was extremely stressful, and in retrospect, humorous. But that’s life, isn’t it? Anyway, here’s the link to the story – The Follies – Genomic Record Keeping.
My Mom tells me that my story “Winter Ranch Olympics” was published in this week’s Western Livestock Reporter! We haven’t gotten our paper yet, but you can bet Sonny won’t be the first one to read this issue-
And I’m proud to be sharing print space with my brother-in-law whose story on his rope horse “Tommy” is in this issue as well. I didn’t know Lee in the days he had Tommy, but Lee’s story makes me wish I had known this horse.
Just added a humorous short story on our Winter Ranch Olympic events. Hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it! Follow this link to Winter Ranch Olympics then please let me know what you think via my Web site Comments page or on my FaceBook page.
