Ranch work

Can’t get the video of working cattle to publish so until I can, thought I’d share a photo of Sonny and Gumbo. Only thing better than working cattle horseback is doing the work with Sonny! This other photo shows a tiny bit of Windsor, my filly, too. Those are her ears! She’s doing the work while Sonny’s just sitting there looking pretty-

Writing and Riding

Busy season on the ranch as we’ve been preconditioning calves around rain, harvesting alfalfa seed and hauling cattle cake. No complaints on delays due to rain!

Still writing, too. After first edit of Magpie Fall, I decided I needed a few more chapters and am almost done with that – with another full review to follow. Have made contact with two self publishing companies with discussions to follow.

Editing & Quilting

Printed Magpie Fall for the first time and busy editing – adding chapters, revising, deleting… Around editing, I’ve finished two baby quilts and started another quilt for Sonny’s upcoming birthday.

Sorry no quilt photos. We’re really challenged these days by internet problems. Grrrr. I’ll post photos when I get to town and have reliable internet service.

Publishing

Been researching self publishing possibilities for the novels. Have to decide between  digitally published, paper published or both. I like to hold a book in my hands when I buy one but love checking digital novels out of  Montana Library 2Go. Decisions, decisions…but such is life! I’d love to have an agent hold my hand through the process, but know that’s unlikely until I have an audience or reputation. How about some feedback on this major issue? Love to have your input.

Excerpt from First Novel

Check it out!

I just put the first chapter of my novel Magpie Summer on my web site. Find it in Books (Unpublished), then select Magpie Summer Excerpt on the drop down menu.

After you read the chapter, please leave a comment on my website Contact page or on my Facebook page. Can’t wait to hear your comments! Remember, since I haven’t published yet I could still incorporate suggestions…

New “Stirrup” Story Added to Web Site

It has taken me nearly as long to update my web page at sandystahlauthor.com with my new story on the development of stirrups as it did to write it! Problem seemed to be with our satellite network connection, which is just a fact of our rural living. Finally though, it’s there!

Please check out the story by going to Stirrups – An Historical View. It’s one of the stories under the Nonfiction section of my web site. Then please leave a comment or share with a friend…but mostly I hope you enjoy learning a little more about the history of stirrups.

Oral History

Yesterday I started an oral history interview with a wonderful friend, a 97 year old ranch woman. I shared my first set of interview questions so she could have time to think about her responses. She said the questions are hard and I told her we’d use them as a basis to start the interview and could go anywhere she wanted from there.

As I drove home, I thought about my potential responses. Here is a sampling of the questions; how would you answer them?

  • What is something that changed the way you lived (like electricity, running water, automobiles) ? Describe your life before and after.
  • What are you proudest of and what do you most regret?
  • How has your life been different than you imagined it would be when you were young?
  • What wisdom that you’ve gained in your life would you like to pass on to your children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren?
